Russian soldiers executed a Ukrainian prisoner of war with a sword in Donetsk region

The Russians executed a Ukrainian prisoner with a sword in Novohrodivka. The Ombudsman appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations.

The Russians committed another bloodthirsty war crime – they executed an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war with a sword. This became known from social networks.

Another execution of a prisoner of war

The Russian military showed yet another disregard for any norms and laws in Novogrodivka, Donetsk region, and executed a Ukrainian. There, a sword with the inscription “For Kursk” was wrapped in the chest of a prisoner of war with his hands bandaged.

“Another war crime – the Russians executed with a sword an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war with his hands bound with tape. The level of barbarism and bloodthirstiness is unfathomable. Such actions are a gross violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War,” said Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

He sent letters to international organizations, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN, asking them to record yet another violation of human rights by Russian terrorists. “I would like to emphasize separately that such show executions are aimed at demoralizing Ukrainian society. However, seeing such actions, we must become even more determined in the fight against the aggressor,” the ombudsman added.

War crimes of the Russian Federation

In June 2024, as part of the peace summit in Switzerland, a discussion panel “Humanitarian dimension. Release of captives and deported persons” was held. At the same time, Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has documented almost 130,000 cases of war crimes committed by Russian terrorists, including 301 cases of sexual violence. In particular, the enemy killed more than 12,000 civilians, including 551 children.

Lubinets, in his turn, added that all those who are in Russian captivity are subjected to systematic torture. At that time, at least 14,000 such cases were confirmed.

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine is investigating 28 executions of Ukrainian prisoners by Russian forces since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, in which a total of 62 Ukrainian servicemen were killed. Later, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin gave a different number – 73 Ukrainian prisoners of war could be executed. These cases are under investigation.
