Russians damage building of Centralized spent Nuclear fuel storage facility in Chernobyl

On June 7, at 02:10, a Russian Shahed attack drone hit the site of the Centralized Spent Nuclear fuel storage facility in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Energoatom reported. A fire broke out at the site of the strike.

As a result of the drone attack, the container reception building was partially destroyed, but no spent nuclear fuel was stored in it.

A large-scale forest fire is still being extinguished in the Chernobyl zone: the fire has spread to 1,200 hectares.

Rescuers managed to quickly localize and extinguish the fire with an area of 40 square meters. Fortunately, no personnel were injured. The radiation level at the site of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility is within normal limits.

There were no injuries or deaths among the company’s employees.

According to official data, the radiation level at the storage site does not exceed permissible standards, and there is no threat to the population.

The Energoatom joint-stock company emphasized that this incident is another act of nuclear terrorism by the Kremlin. Targeted attacks on critical nuclear facilities indicate Russia’s complete disregard for international law and the deliberate creation of risks of a global catastrophe.

“Another attack on a nuclear infrastructure facility once again demonstrated to the whole world the true face of the Kremlin regime, which deliberately creates threats to nuclear and radiation safety. Russia continues to act as a terrorist state and a nuclear terrorist, disregarding international law and the safety of millions of people,” Energoatom wrote.

Currently, specialized services are continuously monitoring the situation at the facility.

Greenpeace Ukraine made a statement about the risk of the collapse of the “sarcophagus” over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant due to the hit of a Russian Geran-2 attack drone on February 14, 2025 in the New Safe Confinement. At the same time, Artem Kolesnyk, an energy policy specialist at the public organization “Ecodia”, emphasized that the Russian attack led to serious damage to an important protective structure, but this is not a reason to panic about a new nuclear disaster.
