The Russians have staged a targeted hunt for passenger trains in Ukraine, trying to completely isolate frontline communities. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba.
“We were recently in Sumy region. The Russians are specifically hunting for trains, in particular passenger ones – launching drones and hitting locomotives when they see rolling stock,” he wrote.
In response to this direct threat to people’s lives, Ukrzaliznytsia has implemented a flexible system of combined transportation in the most dangerous areas. Now the trains deliver passengers to a safe point, where they transfer to special bus shuttles to bypass areas under direct Russian fire.
Modular shelters are being installed at stations to protect people. Ukrzaliznytsia itself is also working to strengthen the protection of rolling stock and is monitoring threats around the clock.
Despite the deadly danger, over 700,000 passengers used the railway in front-line regions in the last month alone.
