Russians once again shot a captured Ukrainian soldier in Donetsk region

Russians executed a Ukrainian prisoner of war near the village of Rozdolne, Volnovakha district, Donetsk region.

This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to the prosecutor’s office, three soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were performing combat missions on April 11, 2025 at positions near the village of Rozdolne, Volnovakha district. During the assault, the Russians took them prisoner. One of the unarmed Ukrainian soldiers was shot by representatives of the Russian army with an automatic weapon.

Investigative and search operations are currently being conducted to establish all the circumstances of the incident. As well as the persons from among the Russian military personnel involved in the commission of the specified crime.

Under the procedural leadership of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into criminal proceedings on the fact of committing a war crime that caused the death of a person (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

“The killing of prisoners is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualifies as a grave international crime. The pre-trial investigation is the main department of the Security Service of Ukraine in Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” the report said.

In January 2025, a video spread online showing Russian military personnel shooting 6 Ukrainian prisoners of war. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said that he immediately reported this crime to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In addition, as the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said, Ukraine is already aware of more than a hundred cases of execution by Russian military personnel of Defense Forces fighters who surrendered to captivity.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have killed at least 245 Ukrainian prisoners of war.
