On June 24, the Russians launched a series of airstrikes on the Slavyansk thermal power plant in the Donetsk region. Slavyansk is under Russian bombing almost daily – the city and its surroundings have become one of the hottest targets for Russian aviation in the Donetsk region. The use of aerial bombs on the generation facility indicates the targeted destruction of the energy infrastructure of the region. The plant is actually being destroyed under serial strikes.
The Russians carried out a series of strikes on the Slavyansk TPP – not a single, but multiple airstrikes. A few days ago, at least 6 aerial bombs landed on the Slavyansk TPP – the current strike is a continuation of this tactic of destruction.
The Slavyansk TPP was temporarily suspended in late May 2022 due to its proximity to the front line and intense fighting in the Donetsk region. In the fall of 2022, the plant suffered serious damage as a result of Russian strikes on its infrastructure. It has since been restored and the plant operated until the spring of this year. However, in May, the TPP was forced to permanently cease electricity production in order to save the lives of its workers.
The Russians continue to systematically attack the facility – methodically exhausting its capacity despite the lack of generation.
The last large fortified centers of the Donetsk region under Ukrainian control – Slavyansk and Kramatorsk – have come under intense attacks from guided bombs and drones. Russian troops are attacking both cities with these means. The target is not only the positions of the Armed Forces, but also any objects that have at least some strategic value.
During 2025 and 2026, Russian troops began to strike mainly at energy infrastructure facilities in frontline regions. Tactics have changed: while previously the main targets were large generation facilities, now individual elements of the energy system are increasingly being attacked. Replacing such elements requires significant time and resources.
