The Prosecutor General’s Office began an investigation into the murder of Ishchenko, an Azov citizen, in Russian captivity

Law enforcement officers have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the death of a soldier of the “Azov” brigade, a defender of Mariupol Oleksandr Ishchenko, who died in Russian captivity

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

As the Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin emphasized, the information in the criminal proceedings clearly indicates that the Russian commanders encourage the cruel treatment of prisoners and directly give corresponding criminal orders, instead of preventing such phenomena.

The investigation into the circumstances of Oleksandr Ishchenko’s death continues on the grounds of violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional homicide (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The Prosecutor General’s Office emphasizes that the killing of a prisoner of war is considered a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualifies as a serious international crime.

The message also states that, in general, Ukrainian law enforcement officers are investigating the murder of 64 prisoners of war by the Russian military. More than 2,200 prisoners of war have been recognized as victims of torture.

The results of the forensic examination were made public, indicating that Oleksandr Ishchenko died as a result of shock caused by multiple rib fractures and blunt blunt trauma to the chest. The man received these injuries during his stay in Russian captivity.
