The Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine initiated 60 cases against Russia for crimes against Ukrainian cultural heritage

According to Attorney General Andriy Kostin, the full-scale Russian invasion has already resulted in the damage or destruction of more than 900 cultural heritage sites.

More than 60 investigations into Russian crimes against Ukrainian cultural heritage are currently being conducted in Ukraine. Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin announced this during the U4J high-level international conference. United for Heritage: “The scale and purposefulness of these crimes is another evidence of the Kremlin’s intentions to carry out genocide against the Ukrainian people. This is what genocide looks like. It is the intention to kill our citizens every day. This is the intention to deprive us of our future by deliberately stealing tens of thousands of our children from Ukraine. And it is the intention to try to erase our history by destroying our cultural heritage. Therefore, today we are united in order for the whole world to know that Russia will be punished for all war crimes, whenever and wherever it commits them.”

According to him, damage or destruction of more than 900 objects of cultural heritage of Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression has been recorded.

“The full-scale invasion has already resulted in the damage or destruction of more than 900 cultural heritage sites. Estimates of the damage caused by the war to the culture of Ukraine reach 19 billion dollars,” said the Prosecutor General.

We will remind, according to the calculations of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, as of the beginning of February, due to full-scale Russian aggression, at least 1,938 objects of cultural infrastructure were damaged or destroyed.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently said that Ukraine will need nearly $9 billion over the next decade to rebuild its cultural sites and tourism industry after a large-scale Russian invasion.
