Russian troops continue to destroy History. This time, the Russians took up the historical and archaeological monument of Crimea – “The ancient city of Chersonese Tavriyskyi and its Choir”.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, reports this: “I appealed to the UN regarding Russia’s destruction of Chersonesus Tavriyskyi! This is another crime on the part of the aggressor country and its destruction of the cultural heritage of Ukraine. We need a reaction from the international community, because history is being destroyed before our eyes!”
He reminded that the “Ancient City of Chersonese Tavriyskyi and its Choir” is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is a unique historical and archaeological monument of Crimea.
“At the same time, as early as 2014, Russia began a large-scale operation to destroy Ukrainian cultural heritage. For almost 10 years, there was no reaction to this crime – monuments of history disappeared without a trace, and the world remained silent,” added the Ukrainian ombudsman.
Lubinets explained that currently the Russians have completely destroyed the authentic monument of world importance Chersonesus Tavriyskyi. Instead, they started illegal construction work on the ruins of Chersonesus, actually building a new city – the so-called historical and archaeological park.
According to the ombudsman, the Russian developers blocked the archaeological remains on the surface with observation decks, several excavated objects were moved and rebuilt in another place.
An amphitheater was built on the site of the ancient citadel, which puts a strain on the original building. At the same time, many archaeological finds were actually stolen by the Russian Federation and taken to Russian museums.
“Russia must be held responsible for the destruction of cultural heritage in accordance with international law! As well as for the theft of museum exhibits, which the Russian Federation is taking out on a large scale from the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine! It is necessary to oblige the aggressor country to return the stolen items!” – he emphasized.
We will remind you that we reported that excavations of a Ukrainian monument of national importance on the site of the ancient Greek city of Chersonesus continue in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
