The Russians destroyed another architectural monument in Kharkiv

Among the buildings destroyed during the attack by Russian drones in Kharkiv is an architectural monument – the so-called “Movement House” at 43 Sumska Street (security number 412).

In the 1990s, it was the headquarters of many Ukrainian organizations involved in the revival of Ukrainian statehood.

The residential building was built in 1901-1903 according to the project of the architect M.E. Roitenberg.

The building was erected on the land of the Kharkiv University in the then popular “historicism” (eclectic) style by the nobleman Serhiy Savych, who purchased the plot in 1901. The appearance of the building resembles an ancient temple. In 1909–1916, the building belonged to the burgher Stepan Kislyakov.

From 1906 to 1912, the German Imperial Consulate was housed in the building, then bearing number 45; Karl Fromman, the first consul of Germany in Kharkiv, also rented an apartment here.

In recent years, a branch of one of the banks was located in the residential building.

It will be recalled that on the night of December 31, the Russians struck four drones in the central part of Kharkiv. Among other administrative, residential and other buildings, the bank building on Sumy Street was damaged. In total, there were 4 fires on an area of about 1,000 square meters.

This is not the first architectural monument that suffered from Russian shelling. Zkorema, the building at 25 Chernyshevska Street was demolished in March 2022.

On December 30, at 7 p.m., Russia hit the center of Kharkiv with missiles: a hospital, a house, a supermarket, and a hotel were damaged. On the night of December 31, the Russians hit the center of Kharkiv with “shaheds”. 4 hits were recorded. The Russians damaged three hospitals and a polyclinic. 13 victims remain in hospitals, a 16-year-old boy is in a moderate condition. As a result of the Russian strikes, 77 buildings were damaged, mostly residential buildings.
