The Russians dug up a barrow of the 5th millennium BC in Mariupol and are planning to build there

In the temporarily occupied Mariupol, the Russian Federation destroyed the ancient monument of the Did mound dating back to the 5th millennium BC.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine on March 26.

As noted by the prosecutor’s office, they started a pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings for violation of the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Information about the destruction of cultural heritage appeared on March 25. According to the investigation, the Russians destroyed the mound with tow trucks. Its height reached six meters, and its diameter was 70.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also noted that such actions by the Russians are a violation of the Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property and the provisions of the IV Convention on the Laws and Customs of War on Land.

The Mariupol City Council informed about the destruction of the archaeological monument. There they told that the mound of Did is located on Pylypa Orlyk Street in the central part of the city. In 2021, the city council conserved the mound to preserve the monument. The city council added that the Russians plan to build a residential building there.
