Kherson Art Museum named after Alexei Shovkunenko: what is it famous for

This is an art museum in the city of Kherson, named after the Ukrainian artist Alexei Alekseevich Shovkunenko. It was opened on May 27, 1978. It is located in the former building of the city hall, architectural landmarks of the early XX century.

In the 20-30s of the 20th century, the museum’s collection was replenished with works by Russian and Western European masters. On the eve of the war, the museum’s funds numbered about 700 exhibits. The art collection of the museum has more than 10 thousand exhibits and is one of the most interesting museum collections in Ukraine. Here are the works of Ukrainian and foreign painting, graphics, sculpture, arts and crafts, starting with samples of Russian icon painting of the 17th century and up to the works of contemporary Kherson artists.

Earlier it was reported that the Russian invaders plundered the art museum in Mariupol. Among the exhibits were seven original masterpieces – paintings by Kuindzhi, Aivazovsky and Dubovsky.

The Russian military, under the slogan of “preserving cultural values,” took valuable works of art of the 17th-20th centuries from the Kherson Art Museum named after Shovkunenko. The invaders did not even take care of the proper transportation of the exhibits. The paintings were wrapped in rags and loaded onto trucks.
