The unique historical monument of Chersonesus Tavriyskyi was completely destroyed by the Russians

Now the Russians are building a theater on the territory of the ancient city.

The Russian occupying power in Crimea continues to destroy a unique monument of world heritage – Chersonesus Tavriyskyi. Scientists of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine sound the alarm: tons of concrete were piled on authentic archaeological remains during the construction of a new theater.

Chersonesus Tavriyskyi is one of the oldest cities on the territory of Ukraine, founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. The monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is an extremely valuable source of information about the ancient civilization.

After Russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014, Ukrainian scientists were actually prohibited from conducting research on the territory of Chersonesus. The Russians actively use the monument for their propaganda purposes, falsifying history and appropriating the cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people.

Russia uses cultural monuments as an ideological weapon. The change in the mental meaning of cultural heritage and the transmission of hostile narratives result in the change of the monument. This can be observed at heritage sites in Crimea. Currently, negative processes are taking place with the only monument of world importance, Chersonesus Tavriysky, – notes Evelina Kravchenko, a senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
