Thousands of tons of oil spilled into the waters of the port of Odesa region: what is known about environmental damage

Due to Russian strikes on the port of Chornomorsk in the Odesa region on April 27, a spill of sunflower oil in the volume of 6 thousand tons was recorded.

This was reported by the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District.

It is currently known that after the Russian attacks, a tank with sunflower oil was destroyed in the commercial port. A leak of part of the product into the seaport waters was recorded.

A spot measuring approximately 400 by 200 meters formed on the surface of the sea in the waters of the port of Chornomorsk.

Barriers were installed at the scene of the accident to contain the spread. The storm sewer was also blocked in order to prevent further oil from entering the water.

Specialists took samples of seawater for laboratory tests.

“The final assessment of the damage to the marine environment caused by the armed aggression will be carried out after receiving the full amount of necessary data,” the State Inspectorate of Ukraine reported.

As a result of the massive attack on Odesa on the night of April 27, at least 11 people were injured, including two children, and residential buildings, port and city infrastructure were damaged.

The Primorsky district suffered the greatest destruction. 175 windows and 12 sq. m of roofs in 13 residential buildings and hotels were damaged there. Damage to private cars, warehouses, a hotel, a funicular and other facilities was also recorded in three districts of the city. The port area was also affected, said the head of the regional military administration, Oleg Kiper.
