Ukraine lost more than 2/3 of its electricity generation due to Russian aggression

Over the 12 years of the war with Russia, Ukraine has lost up to 40 GW of generation, said Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Anatoliy Kutsevol. According to him, it is necessary to create a new energy system that would be more resistant to attacks.

Ukraine must not just restore damaged infrastructure, but actually create a new energy system that is resistant to Russian attacks

Over the past decade, Ukraine has lost a significant part of its energy generation due to Russian aggression, and today energy has actually become a sphere of national security, comparable to defense, said Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine for European Integration Anatoliy Kutsevol.

According to the Deputy Minister of Energy, back in the 1990s, the generation capacity in Ukraine was about 55 GW, but due to the war with Russia and the occupation of some territories, today the country has only 10-12 GW. “Ukraine started in the 90s with 55 GW. At the moment we have only 10-12 – depending on the moment of this generation. What happened? 2014 – the annexation of Crimea, the occupation of part of the territory of Ukraine and the war. We lost about 20 GW. After the full-scale invasion in 2022, we lost about 20 GW more,” – explained Kutsevol.

The Deputy Minister of Energy emphasized that Russian attacks are purposefully destroying the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, so the energy sector today should be considered on a par with the military sphere and, accordingly, requires new approaches. According to Kutsevol, Ukraine has to not just restore the damaged infrastructure, but actually create a new energy system that would be more resistant to attacks.

Separately, Anatoly Kutsevol thanked the German government for its support in restoring the Ukrainian energy sector.
