Ukrainian law enforcement officers are investigating more than 77,000 war crimes committed by Russians

Courts have already handed down 30 sentences.

More than 77,000 facts of war crimes have been registered in Ukraine, reported the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin.

According to him, war crimes include murder, humiliation and rape, destruction of private property, forced deportation, forced detention of Ukrainians in the occupied territories, mass looting in the occupied territories and many others.

“There is practically no war crime in history that was not committed by the Russians on Ukrainian soil,” he emphasized.

The chief prosecutor reported that the agency has already identified 305 persons who have been notified of suspicion. In addition, 150 indictments are ready for consideration in courts. Ukrainian courts have already handed down 30 verdicts against Russian war criminals who committed crimes on Ukrainian soil.

“We are investigating war crimes during the ongoing aggression. And we not only investigate them, but also bring the Russians to justice,” Kostin said.

The Prosecutor General added that 99 percent of all cases of war crimes committed against Ukrainians will be prosecuted and tried in Ukraine.

“More than 99 percent of all cases of war crimes committed against Ukrainians will be investigated and brought to court in Ukraine. Whereas the International Criminal Court will certainly fulfill its additional role where we cannot, for example, reach Vladimir Putin as the current head of state because of his personal immunity at the national level,” he explained.

According to the Prosecutor General, four factors contribute to the establishment of justice by bringing criminals to criminal responsibility for documented crimes: national efforts, assistance from the International Criminal Court, international coordination and the creation of a special international tribunal for the alleged crime of aggression.
