Among the dead and wounded civilians in the war in Ukraine, 60% are men, according to the report of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission (UNHRM), which was released on the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. There are more boys than girls among the dead and injured children.
The UN mission is only analyzing confirmed and identified casualties since 24 February 2022. In total, 30,457 civilians were found: 10,582 dead and 19,875 wounded.
Among the dead and wounded adults – 11.5 thousand men and 7.5 thousand women. Among the children are 900 boys and 670 girls.
It was impossible to determine the gender of some of the civilians.
The bloodiest month of 2022 was March, when 4,290 civilians died in Ukraine. Losses in 2023 were found to be lower, however, 150 to 200 civilians died every month in Ukraine as a result of hostilities. Most of them are people from the frontline areas.
Most often (91% of cases), the civilian population suffers from explosive weapons with a wide impact zone – these are artillery, tank, anti-aircraft fire, strikes by cruise and ballistic missiles, drones, and airstrikes.
In addition, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission found that 1,072 educational institutions and almost half a thousand medical facilities were destroyed or damaged during the two years of the war.
